Fashion in the 60s

Bell bottoms and Tie Dye were popular and worn by everyone in the 60s. Women typically might have worn miniskirts and go-go boots. Men typically might have worn turtlenecks. Peace signs and sunglasses were often in trend as well. As for hairstyles, the beehive and the flipped bob were popular among women and the mop-top was more popular among men. In general, clothing that was considered "hippie" was generally in fad.

Music in the 60s

In the 1960s music from the U.K. went into style, this was known as the British Invasion. In particular, surf music, blues, and rock were popular. Popular bands included The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elvis, Ray Charles, and Bob Dylan.

Sports was a very important part of the American culture in the 1960s. In 67' and 68' the Packers won the first two-ever Superbowls and the Tigers won the World Series of 67' and the Cardinals won the Worl Series of 68'. The Olympics of 1960 were held in Rome with the Soviet Union winning with 103 total medals and the U.S. in second place with 71 total medals. At the time, popular athletes included Wilt Chamberlin (a record-setting basketball player), Pele (one of the greatest soccer players of all time), Muhammad Ali (one of the greatest boxers of all time), and Hank Aaron (a well known baseball player)

Entertainment in the 60s

In the 1960s, music and movies were quickly becoming popular among the American people. Movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, To Kill A Mockingbird, and Planet of the Apes became popular. Other movies such as Psycho became an inspiration for future movies, such as Scream (1996), and set a basis for the horror movie industry. Go-go dancing and the Twist became popular dances. Kids played games such as Hide and Seek and Marco Polo.

Culture/Values of the 60s

In the '60s values such as community, civil rights, and sexual freedom were becoming focused on. There was still lots of sexism and racism at the time but movements were beginning such as the Free Love movement and the Civil Rights Movement. Some slang at the time was "a gas" which meant having fun, "wipe out" which meant to crash, and "twitchin" which meant very awesome. Most of the slang words of the time came from people who were considered "hippies".

Many inventions came from the 60s such as bubble wrap, 911 as an emergency number, zip codes, kevlar, Sharpees, lasers, ATMs, and video games. These inventions improved the lives of the American people and are still relevant.

Food in the 60s

Food in the 60s was generally healthy, with people consuming many fruits and vegetables while also cooking at home, however fast food was becoming a thing and began to revolutionize the way the American people ate. The average cost of items by the pound was less than a dollar, and food was so much cheaper than it would seem to be today. Popular foods were onion dip, gelatin, fondue, and meat. Popular restaurants and food styles were McDonald's, KFC, and French Cuisine.

The economy was going up in the 1960s because of all the wars the US was fighting causing people to have wider access to jobs. President Johnson also helped create jobs and boost the economy. At the time the unemployment rate was around 4.5-5%. There weren't any major shortages and the taxes were generally low for the time.

In the 1960s the two main and well-known presidents were Kennedy and Johnson. John F. Kennedy was president during the Cuban Missile Crisis and is known for handling that as well as working with leaders such as MLK on civil rights. Kennedy was assassinated in '63. After Kennedy was assassinated, Johnson became president and served for five years. He worked with civil rights and the economy but ultimately failed when it came to the Vietnam War. There was a U.K. affair known as the Profumo Affair. The Civil Rights Movement was happening during that time. A few wars include the Vietnam War, and the Nigerian Civil War.
